Where to Recycle

In addition to recycling of selected items at the Big Canoe Trash Facility, residents can recycle other materials at a location less than 5 minutes from the gate - Pickens County Recycling, Cove Road.

BIG CANOE, GA

A convenient centralized facility near the North Gate is available to Big Canoe residents for trash and limited recycling. Residents may access more recycling operations less than 5 minutes outside the gate.

PICKENS COUNTY RECYCLING CENTER | JASPER, GA

Pickens County Recycling located in Jasper  allows for drive through trash disposal as well as recycling for Aluminum beverage cans, corrugated cardboard, glass, paper, select #1 and #2 plastics, steel cans and other metal.

Recycling Tips

1. Keep materials clean and dry.
2. If you use a bag to contain your recycling, do not throw it in with the recycling.
3. Do not recycle items that contained hazardous materials, such as weed killer or fertilizer.
4. “If in doubt, throw it out” – Trash it if unsure whether an item is suitable for recycling, otherwise it may contaminate the entire load.
5. Separate recyclable items from the rest of your trash in a box or bag.

How to Recycle

"About 70 million homes in the US have easy access to recycling services."` But, do you know how to recycle the different materials in your household?

ALUMINUM BEVERAGE CANS

• No need to rinse if empty
• No need to crush the cans
• Do not recycle food cans or other cans with beverage cans





CORRUGATED CARDBOARD

• Corrugated cardboard has a wavy sheet in between two flat sheets
• No need to remove tape, staples, or labels, but DO remove packing materials
• Ensure is recyclables are free of food residue (no pizza boxes)
• Cardboard disposed of at Big Canoe’s trash facility is not recycled. To recycle, take the cardboard to Cove Road.

GLASS BOTTLES AND JARS

• Empty bottles and jars – rinsed as needed to remove the residual food
• No need to separate by color or remove labels
• Remove lids
• Other types of glass (glasses, plates, Pyrex baking pans are NOT recyclable)

PAPER

• No need to remove staples or paper clips from paper, or  see-through window from envelopes
• Types of paper that can be recycled
• Letters, magazines, newspapers, flyers, etc.
• Product packaging, e.g. cereal boxes, frozen food 
packages
• Photographs are not recyclable

PLASTICS

• Look for a #1 or #2 in a triangle on the bottom of your item
• #1 plastic materials must be see-through and clear or light-colored. (Soda/water bottles, clear clamshell  containers from fruit and vegetables, etc.)
• #2 plastics are separated between solid colored (liquid laundry detergent packaging) and clear
• Must be empty, no need to remove lids

STEEL CANS AND OTHER METAL

• Steel cans (clean and no need to remove labels)
• Grills, appliances, bicycles, window screens, Christmas tree lights, extension cords, white wire closet shelving
• Empty aerosol cans are okay
• Pie tins and aluminum foil are not accepted


Hazardous and Hard to Dispose of Items 

Two facilities are available to Big Canoe residents seeking to dispose of a hazardous item or an item that is not considered normal household trash.

Car batteries, electronics, old televisions, tires, used oil.

CHaRM (Center for Hard to Recycle Materials)

Hazardous chemicals, mattresses, paint, styrofoam, tires, etc.
